Damaged Hair Repair Tips

Like your skin, your hair is susceptible to all types of damaging conditions.  Some of these can include:

  • Weather – heat or cold can cause hair to lose moisture or become brittle
  • Sun – the ultra violet rays from sun exposure can damage the hair and scalp as much as the skin
  • Airborne pollutants – dirt, dust, and other debris floating in the air can build up on your hair and deprive it of vital nutrients
  • Chemicals – from hair spray to perfumes and even hair care products, certain types of chemicals can cause a reaction, damaging hair follicles
  • Age – as we age, hair loses its ability to restore and nourish itself
  • Styling – blow drying, curling and flat irons burn the hair, causing damage

The good news is, there are some ways to help reduce problems with damaged hair.  The following are some of the top tips:

  1. Check early and often – once a week or so, take a good look at your hair and scalp. If you are finding frizz, split ends, or your scalp is red or flaking you could have damage that can increase rapidly.  Finding damaged hair problems early is one of the best ways to prevent further issues.
  2. Get a trim – trimming your hair removes any problem areas such as split ends and allows hair to flow and breathe better. A good trim also reduces the weight of your hair, allowing the follicles to recover and strengthen.
  3. Reduce heated styling – whenever possible, let your hair air dry and avoid the use of a blow drier, curlers, or a flat iron. This allows your hair time to heal the damage caused from frequent use of heated styling products.  Consider doing a bun-style, pony tail, or simply wrapping in a stylish scarf.
  4. Avoid harsh chemicals – delay hair color or other harsh chemicals to give your hair time to repair itself. You may want to reduce the use of certain types of sprays, mousse or gel products as they may clog hair follicles. Instead use some natural oils or gentler products that still provides the styling and control you need.

Taking Your First Step

Your hair sends a message, and when hair is damaged the message could be misunderstood.  With time all hair will take some level of damage, but there are ways to reduce and help hair to stay healthy and vibrant. Take steps to rebuild and restore your damaged hair and keep it looking fearlessly fabulous.

Checklist For Natural Hair Care

It is not all that difficult to keep your hair healthy. A well-nourished scalp can lead to great-looking hair and prevent its falling and thinning.
