Menopause is characterized by hormonal changes in a woman’s body. This usually happens in the late 40’s or early 50’s. A woman may experience various physical symptoms. One of them is hair loss.
It’s a known fact that menopause and hormone imbalances cause hair loss. Women are also found to undergo stress during this period. It may due to other physical symptoms like hot flashes, vaginal dryness that may make sex painful, insomnia partly due to hot flashes during the night, heightened anxiety, and mood swings.
All this can overwhelm a woman. Lack of sleep may make her even more irritable. Noticing the changes brings stress. This contributes more to hair loss.
With age, preferably by the end of 40’s, quantity of eggs produced in ovaries declines. Due to this, ovaries produce less of estrogen. The symptoms that you experience are body’s responses to the decrease in hormones.
According to doctors, hair loss due to menopause is directly linked to the decrease in estrogen and progesterone in the body.
With the dip in hormone levels, hair growth slows down. Hair also become thinner.
With time, the drop in levels of estrogen and progesterone leads to a rise in level of androgens (male hormones). This is like adding fuel to fire because androgens are known to shrink hair follicles. This again contributes to hair loss. Androgens also lead to an increase in facial hair growth in women undergoing menopause.
Symptoms like insomnia, hot flashes, anxiety, and mood swings indicate menopause, but you must always consult a doctor and discuss the symptoms. Don’t just assume you are entering menopause.
Hair loss can also be due to other hormone imbalances. It is wise to take medical advice. Avoid self-treating the condition.
