How to Take Care of Curly Hair? 7 Questions Answered

Curly hair do grab eyeballs. Those sensuous whorls are enough to tangle hearts. But, hey, it’s not easy to manage those whorls and swirls and what not! Curly hair are most prone to becoming frizzy, coarse, and dry.

Thanks, or no thanks, to the curls, natural oils of scalp fail to reach the entire length of hair, leaving them drier.

However, with the right hair care routine, you can flaunt healthy and beautiful curls. Yet, with so many twists and turns on your hair, your mind gets ruffled with questions.

Here are a few frequently asked questions answered by our experts.

1. Why is My Hair Curly?

Well, there is science behind it. According to research, a strand’s curvature depends on the follicle.

  • Round follicles produce straight hair.
  • Oval follicles produce wavy hair.
  • Elliptical or asymmetrical or hooked follicles produce curly hair.

So, all you curly-haired ladies, your follicles are asymmetrical. The hair they produce tend to curl and twist.

Patients who undergo chemotherapy lose almost all of their hair. When their hair grow back after a few months, they are curly. Why is that so? According to researchers, cancer drugs inhibit cellular receptor known as EGFR in the follicle. So, hair tend to grow curly, as these receptors are responsible for regulating hair growth.

2. Can I Wash My Curls Daily?

No. Wash them twice or thrice a week only. Daily shampooing strips natural oils off your hair and renders them drier and wilder. If you live or work in a highly polluted environment or sweat a lot, wash them every alternate day, but still not every day.

Use sulfate-free, fortified shampoo to wash your curls. Sulfate-free formula is gentle to hair. Our experts recommend Keranique Scalp Stimulating Shampoo. It is a mild cleansing formula with vitamins, keratin, and moisturizing agents.

3. My Curls Are Too Dry. Are There Any Oils For My Curls?

Curly or straight, hair always benefit from a nice oil massage. It stimulates blood flow to scalp and activates follicles, not mentioning the relaxation it provides.

The following oils are great for curly hair:

  • Olive oil: It deeply moisturizes curly locks. Heat 2-3 tablespoons oil and apply the oil when it gets lukewarm. Massage the scalp with gentle circular motions of your fingertips. Then, wrap your head with a warm towel. After 45-60 minutes, shampoo hair with a mild cleanser. Your hair will be soft to touch!
  • Coconut oil: Massage scalp with warm coconut oil just before going to bed. Wash hair the next morning with a sulfate-free shampoo. You will love your soft, beautiful curls!
  • Castor oil: This oil is sticky, but marvelous for dry hair. Apply the oil an hour before shampooing. You can also leave it on scalp overnight. Watch the shine on hair!

Apart from the above, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, grapeseed oil, argan oil, and rose oil work wonders on curly hair. Ayurvedic oils from the East are also becoming popular here due to their amazing benefits.

4. How Do I Maintain My Curls?

Don’t always condition your hair. The curls may fall flat with regular conditioning. Skip conditioning, especially when you have massaged hair with oil. Only shampoo them mildly.

Avoid using too much of styling products on hair. Use a non-greasy spray to keep those flyaway strands in place. Keranique Lift & Repair Spray is one of our experts’ favorite. It will give your curls a lovely lift and repair any damage to the strands.

Handle curly hair less and the curls will stay intact. Do not mess with them much.

5. What Are the Best Hairstyles For My Curly Tresses?

The following hairstyles look chic with curls:

  • Classic updo: It looks lovely on a curly mane. You can use Keranique’s spray to give your bun a neat look and keep the strands in place. A great hairstyle for the workplace and formal events.
  • High ponytail: We are going ultra high here. So, gather your tresses at the crown of scalp. Tie them with a rubber band. Let the soft curls fall from a height like a “waterfall.” This is a great look for hangouts and outdoor activities. The hairstyle also defines your face well.
  • Messy half bun: This is the trendiest hairstyle at present. Tie your hair in a loose and messy bun, with strands falling off or teasing your face. It’s a fun hairstyle.

6. What Are the Best Natural Treatments For Curly Hair?

The following hair masks are best for keeping curls well moisturized and nourished:

  • Avocado mask: Mash one ripe avocado. Mix two tablespoons olive oil and one tablespoon honey to the mashed fruit. Form a paste. Apply on hair. Leave on for 20-30 minutes. Shampoo.
  • Egg and olive mask: Beat eggs in a bowl. Mix olive oil, mayonnaise, and vinegar to them. Apply on hair. Leave on for 25-30 minutes. Shampoo.

Our experts recommend using Keranique Volumizing Keratin Conditioner, in case your curls are excessively dry and difficult to manage and style. The conditioner also fights split ends.

7. Do Curly Hair Need Special Care?

Yes. You cannot let your curls just be. They need special care and maintenance. Be particular about the following things:

  • Use a satin pillowcase instead of a cotton one to reduce friction between hair.
  • Use heat styling products occasionally. The heat can damage your curls and leave them drier.
  • Avoid keeping your hair tied up in tight hairstyles whole day. Let them loose.
  • Use hair products designed for curly hair.
  • Handle your curls gently. Do not jerk or pull hair while combing or brushing.
  • A pre-shampoo hair treatment can be a boon for curly hair. Either apply a hair mask or give your scalp an oil treatment before shampooing. This keeps your hair moisturized and manageable.
  • Avoid combing or brushing hair when wet.
  • Trim hair regularly to prevent split ends. A trim every 6-8 weeks is fine.

Love your curls. Do you know people with straight hair use rollers to get curls? Nature has blessed you with natural curls!
